Who is the world’s tallest living man?
The world’s tallest living man is named Sultan Kösen. He was born on 10 December 1982 in Mandrin, in south-eastern Turkey in a farmer’s family whose parents and sisters were of average height.
How tall is the world’s tallest living man?
Sultan Kösen, who is the world’s tallest living man, measures 2m51. He has held this title since 2009, when his height was officially recognised by the Guinness Book.
Sultan’s childhood
After a normal childhood, he experienced an incredible growth spurt around age 10.
Due to his extreme height and the lack of school adaptation to his height, Sultan decided to stop his studies to become a farmer with his family who were struggling to make ends meet.
Why is he so tall?
Sultan Kösen’s incredible height is due to an illness called “”pituitary gigantism””. This is a disease resulting from overproduction of growth hormone released by the pituitary gland. Generally this occurs when a tumour develops at the same level as the gland.
Why has Sultan Kösen stopped growing?
Following his title as the world’s tallest man obtained in 2009 Sultan received significant media attention. This allowed him to be noticed by the University of Virginia in the United States which offered him surgical treatment. The goal was to follow Gamma Knife treatment to remove his tumour. In addition to this operation carried out in 2012, he was prescribed medication to control his growth hormone levels. He is now considered cured.
How does the world’s tallest man experience his great height?
Sultan seems very happy to be tall and says he enjoys a normal life. He enjoys, for example, playing video games with his friends. For him, being tall allows him to help his family with daily chores like changing light bulbs or hanging curtains.
On the other hand, he is frustrated by not being able to easily find clothes adapted to his height, particularly for his 1.26m legs and his 97 cm arms. The same applies to his feet of 36.5 and 35.5cm. He also indicates that he finds it difficult to get into cars.
However his fame allows him to enjoy life more with many all-expenses-paid trips and bespoke suits.
What does Sultan do in life?
Since his title as the world’s tallest man by the Guinness Book he has been appointed cultural ambassador for Turkey to improve tourism in his region.
He also received offers for roles in Hollywood films. He got his first role in 2016 in the film Achieving the Impossible.
Since 2012 Sultan is also a member of the Magic Circus of Samoa troupe. This is a travelling troupe that performs in Pacific islands, Tahiti, New Caledonia and the Seychelles.
And love in all this?
From the 2000s Sultan indicated to the media that he was looking for his soulmate. His wish came true shortly after, he met his Merve Dibo (1.75m) who came from Syria. Two months later, the young couple got married in front of 1500 people and moved to Dede köy.
In an interview, he stated that his biggest problem with his wife was communication, as he spoke Turkish but his wife only spoke Arabic. The couple divorced in 2021, citing the language barrier as one of the main problems.
The world’s largest hands?
In addition to being the world’s tallest man Sultan also has the world’s largest hands. They measure 28.5 cm from the wrist to the tip of the middle finger. As a reminder, the record for the largest hands of all time is still held by Robert Wadlow (31.5cm). It remains to be seen if Sultan could find his happiness on our page for large-size gloves.
The world’s largest feet?
Sultan Kösen does not have the world’s largest feet, or at least he no longer does. He held this record until 2011.
